DIT LGBT Society: About Us

About Us

The DIT LGBT Society is a society for DIT students who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender, and their straight friends.

The Society aims to provide a safe environment for its members to get together for our weekly meetings and the various events we hold throughout the year. While we are predominantly a fun-focused social group we also aim to raise the profile of issues that LGBT students are faced with.

We hold weekly events throughout the college year, which members are e-mailed and texted about with notice.

Last year some of the things we got up to included…

  • Camping trip
  • Rocky Horror Show in the Grand Canal Theatre
  • Dublin Ghost Bus tour
  • Guinness Storehouse for St Patrick's Day
  • Themed movie nights
  • Pancakes for Pancake Tuesday
  • Christmas Dinner
  • Greyhound racing
  • Games nights
…and lots more!

So far this year we've had

  • Society opening reception & night out
  • Bring a Straight Mate Games Night
  • Movie nights in the IFI
  • Bake Sale in aid of Aware
  • Jerry Springer: The Opera in the Grand Canal Theatre

One of the main events of Semester 1 is Pink Training, a USI organised weekend away of LGBT issues workshops and general mayhem! It takes place in November, and last year 18 students travelled to Cork from DIT. This year we have a delegation of 28 taking part in NUI Galway from November 18-20th.

Rainbow Week is the main event of Semester 2, and this year will take place from January 30th to February 2nd 2012. During this week we hold events that appeal to the entire student population, raise awareness of LGBT issues, and raise lots of money for charity!
